Former Scorps coach Harrell takes Charlotte grid position By George Cox Sports Editor CHARLOTTE — Fortner North Brunswick head foothill coach Clark Harrell, whose one Scorpion team w ill be remembered for its ex cellent defensive play, was named head football coach at 4A Charlotte Harding High School on Thursday, The Chvrl&ttt Observer reported. Charlotte Harding, a perennial power in the 1950s under legendary’ coach Dave Harris, played for the state championship eight years ago against Gamer when the Rams were under the direction of Bruce Hardin. Hardin then moved to West Char lotte to establish a 4A power before going to 3A Kannapolis Brown, where he coached against Harrell the past two seasons when he was at Sun Valley High near Monroe. Harrell, who played linebacker at East Carolina University under for mer Pirate and Auburn coach Pat Dye from 1975-19, got his start at IA Columbia High in 1984-85 be fore moving to North Brunswick for one season. He then went to 3A Bartlett Yancey until 1988 before taking the Wilson Beddingfield Job. Then he moved to Sun Valley High as head football coach and athletic director. A good friend and pupil of West Bninswick head coach Jim Brett. Harrell said he had finally reached his goal of coaching a potential 4A state champion. After locking at the Harding films of last season, Harrell was im pressed with the team’s speed and promise. 'I can see some real potential, es pecially w ith that speed,1* he said.
